DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
Despite past progress as a society, it is clear that biases still exist as a result of an individual’s race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background, among other attributes. These biases may unfairly impact an individual’s chance of success to achieve their goals and achieve their highest potential. Unfortunately, implicit and explicit biases also extend into academia, including STEM fields. As a teacher, mentor, and colleague, I am committed to generating a supportive and inclusive climate where diversity, including intellectual diversity, is championed. Under this climate, all students, staff, and faculty can thrive regardless of their background. I believe that diversity in the lab and classroom ultimately makes science better as participants bring new ideas, perspectives, and methods to their collaborative work.
